Bay of Islands New Zealand 2019 — 2020

There can be no better means of escaping weeks of dreary winter overcast and snow in the Northern California mountains than to decamp to New Zealand’s Bay of Islands where February is high summer. A plus is to be befriended by a fellow Californian who can boast of a racing 50-foot sailboat.

A mutual friend armed us with Gary’s contact information in New Zealand and he kindly invited us to sail with him on the California Kiwi. Gary divides his life between Opua New Zealand where he has a home and B&B and Northern California tucked away in a cabin in Plumas County. The combination of the two countries affords him the delights of eternal summer.

The Bay of Islands area varies from dramatic coastline to quiet inlets and uncrowded beaches.
