While we were in Queenstown, Paul Harris and I  took the opportunity to drive over the Crown Range to the Wanaka airport where we thought to find a fine collection of antique airplanes. We stopped on the top of the Crown Range for a brief visit at the old Cardrona Hotel.

Then we pulled into the Wanaka airport, to our dismay, we discovered that the aircraft collection was no longer; a private collection of fine vintage aircraft had been removed (sold?) after the death of the original owner of the collection. The hanger complex was converted into the National Transport and Toy Museum. This turned out to be a hanger complex jammed to the rooftops with cars, bike, airplanes, toys and about anything else you could think of for a garage sale. It was great fun weaving our way through the mass of “stuff.”

Paul, a true car enthusiast, finds machines he has never seen before, some a complete puzzle to him.

As he points out to a couple of other visitors, Paul does root out an American classic gem.

Our last night in Queenstown we treat ourselves to dinner at the local (you guessed it) Speights Ale House
